I few weeks ago, I got to go back to UP Diliman, my university - the University of the Philippines. I didn’t know how much I missed the place! The spaces, the trees, the (fresh) air, the whole uplifting academic enviroment that just makes you love learning and go back to school.
Even though I only got to go inside Palma Hall aka AS again, still some pictures just had to be taken for the sake of.

In front of Palma Hall - the AS steps, student groups are given freedom to express their feelings by street painting/messages, may it be for the sake of art, political or social views. Events and gathering are held here a lot, too.

Inside AS, there are boards anyone can postto freely (…so, just imagine how it was in the non-cellphone eras…), walls are canvases (here seen in the center, the Oblation, the symbol of UP, around it various scenes from our history). Lobbies are usually hangout/meeting places, waiting areas, or “tambayan” with no seats around, we just crash on the floors - the UP way… I guess not anymore?
And what do you do in UP to kill time? (if you weren’t studying or partying that is.. hehe…) We eat!

Dominican Republic

Despite the swine flu pretty much rocking the whole world, my one week all-inclusive Dominican Republic vacation with my nurse friends was a green light, from May 5 to May 12. Not gonna lie, I was scared, but you know, you can’t stop living life. You only got one. Insert gazillion cliches here.

boracay
boracay, for me, is the most beautiful island in the Philippines, known for its coffee-creamer white sand (as i like to describe it), calm blue-green water, and night life that can rival that of puerto galera. i was fortunate to have a boyfriend that has a family hotel there (teehee) so i usually go there once a year.
last may 1-4, 2009 was my fourth trip to boracay, but i got to experience a lot of firsts:
1. rain!!!!!!!!
it was raining almost every night and the sun only shone for like half a day only, usually when its very early morning and i always miss it since i wake up late. this is the first time i experienced cloudy skies and hard rain for more than an hour in bora, but even that did not dampen my genkiness!
2. be there with lance’s family
it’s usually just his mom who’s there (since she’s the one managing the hotel) but this time his whole fam decided to take their labor day vacay there as well. some pics at the beach and the family dinner at obama resto (which but the way, have very yummy food and shakes!)

3. go with my (college) friends.

My good pal Annabs suggested that we, along with our friend Niño, document any activity that would pass as a holy week observance in our area. And I thought, what on earth would I find worth documenting in Project 6? I’ve lived there for nearly 3 years now but I’ve never found anything worth even taking a second look at. Sure, I’m renting an apartment there, but it’s because of its proximity to my school, not because it’s the most interesting residential area in the metro. It’s strategic alright, just a jeepney ride away from Trinoma and SM North, but it’s essentially a “city” which, compared to Balagtas, Bulacan (Annabs’) and Camarin, Caloocan (Niño’s), has nothing special and unusual to offer. It has the popular Mt. Carmel Church, but this church is more famous for its mass baptismal rites on weekends than for its holy week celebration. I doubt we have a senakulo or even a pabasa, as I haven’t seen any. That I felt stuck with very little to work with would be an understatement. I wanted to go someplace exotic, but that wouldn’t technically be “my area.” And with buses filled with tourists, go where exactly? So in the spirit of friendship and practicality (and boredom really), I went to Mt. Carmel Church anyway which is only a block away from my place.

Update
Last Holy Week, I was supposed to go to Bicol with my good friends Jules and Niño. We had this grand plan of taking the 14 hour train ride to Bicol. A good old fashioned road trip was the goal. Unfortunately, when we we called PNR to book tickets, we found out the last trip they had to Bicol was ages ago in 2006 and the farthest they go now is until Laguna.
So as not to waste our plans, we decided to just rediscover how Lent is spent on our hometown. I’m posting Jules’ entry here on our Late Lent series of posts for 3rd World Kids.
Enjoy!
With much drama and last minute shiznit…my girls and I finally pulled off our New York City trip. Gotta admit though, I was thinking of backing out due to financial restraints (lol), err, due to a pending Dominican Republic trip that cost me a grand plus plus. I was undergoing a spending phase so my lust for NY wasn’t enough. But I went anyway. Might as well see the Big Apple.
This was the main reason why:

C’mon Fil-Canadian bigwigs; get your wheels rolling and establish a Jollibee in Toronto already! Don’t make me mad!
We took the ferry to Staten Island but not really planning on getting off onto the island; we just wanted to see the Statue of Liberty

Kuya Jorick and Ate Cathy trained all the way up from Saskatchewan down to the heart of Ontario. They stayed here in Mississauga for a good three weeks and I’m pretty sure they covered plenty territories; from malls (they LOVED Dixie Mall and so do I) to falls (Niagara!) and by the way, oh man they’re such awesome cooks!

We took them on a boat trip around Toronto Islands, which mind-bogglingly cost $20 each person. Epic rip off! An inside joke that withstood a long duration was born at that moment.

I was so glad when I read it over at “IAmOnTheStreets.com“. Wow Philippines recently got an upgrade to Awesome Philippines.
The Philippines has so much good things to offer but not properly presented. One thing 3rdworldkids wanted was to write about and feature some of these awesome places and great experiences that one can discover here in our country, so we absolutely support this new effort to promote the Philippines as a world-class tourist-friendly vacation destination.~

zambales
After a decade, yes a decade, I was able to visit my Mother’s hometown of Cabangan, Zambales. It was an unplanned trip - all we decided was we’ll go if we can. My only godfather, my Ma’s younger brother was also in town for a week-long vacation, finally able to visit his family because he has been working overseas for many years ( Laos, this time). So in turn, it was an impromptu reunion, which I jokingly told them, fit for the show “Wish Ko Lang”.
